People always ask me what my favorite value wines are....with prices going through the roof and less money in everyone's pockets... In general, it's pretty hard to find much worth drinking for <$10, though there are a few out there, usually <$20 is more managable for something good. Here are some wines that keep me happy every day of the week:
Copain Vin de Saison - 3-3.5* - they do a range of 4 "seasonal" wines (L'ete - Viogner, L'printemps - Rose, L'hiver - Syrah, L'autome - Pinot Noir) - all are fantastic wines for $20 and under (K&L, Wine House SF, and several other stores stock one or more of them, also available at the winery in Sonoma)
Beckman Cuvee Le Bec - 3* - a GSM blend from Santa Barbara county- fruity, well balanced - $16-20 (BevMo)
Cape Barren Native Goose GSM - 3* - a GSM blend from McLaren Vale, Australia - needs a little time to open up, but has great fruit, pepper, and complexity for the price - $17-20 (Winerz.com)
Monte Volpe Primo Rosso (Graziano Vineyards) - 2.5* - bright Zinfandel fruit, a blend of 5-6 grapes, great table wine - $11 (available at winery in Mendocino)
Tapiz Malbec - Mendoza, Argentina - 2.5* - dark fruits, a little spicy, straightforward and nice - $9-12 (Bevmo, was part of their 5c sale, but usually on sale for ~$12, i swear, they raise the price just for the 5c sale...)
Urban Uco Malbec - Mendoza, Argentina - 2.5* - good acidity to have with food for a Malbec, nice fruits and well balanced - $10 (Cost Plus)
Domaine Ste Michelle - 2* - sparkling Brut, Blanc de Noir, Blanc de Blans, Washington State - great bubbly for the price, very clean - $7-8 (Trader Joe's, BevMo)
Egri Bikaver (or something like that) - 2* - an easy drinking Hungarian red, "Bull's Blood", pretty light, fruity red - $4 (Trader Joe's)
